What kind of dinosaur is this?

This dinosaur is inspired by the Dilophosaurus, a meat-eating dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic period, about 193 million years ago. Its name means “two-crested lizard” because it had two bony crests on its head. Scientists think it probably used these crests to show off—just like some animals today use bright colors or fancy feathers to attract others or scare off rivals.
Even though movies often show Dilophosaurus with a big frill around its neck (like some modern lizards), paleontologists haven’t found any evidence that it really had one. Still, it’s a creative idea, which is why many artists draw it with this impressive neck frill—just like in this coloring page!
Dilophosaurus was a fast, agile dinosaur with strong legs, sharp teeth, and curved claws. It could run quickly and hunt small animals. Compared to some other dinosaurs, it wasn’t very large—about 6 meters (20 feet) long and weighing as much as a bear.

How to color a Dilophosaurus dinosaur

Coloring this dinosaur is a fun artistic challenge because we don’t know exactly what color it was. That means you have the freedom to imagine! You can also take inspiration from modern animals that blend in or stand out.
Main areas to color:
  • Body and tail: Choose a base color like green, brown, or gray for a more realistic look. Or use bright colors like blue, orange, or purple if you want your dinosaur to stand out!
  • Spots or markings: Make the spots a contrasting color. For example, if the body is green, try yellow or red spots.
  • Neck frill (the “collar”): Use vibrant colors here—fiery red, hot pink, yellow, or even a gradient effect to make it look extra eye-catching.
  • Claws and teeth: White, light gray, or beige work well.
  • Background: Use greens for bushes, blues for the sky, and earthy tones for the ground. Adding subtle shadows can give your scene more depth.

Art tips:

  • Try warm colors (reds, yellows, oranges) if you want your dinosaur to look energetic or fierce.
  • Use cool colors (greens, blues, purples) for a calm or mysterious vibe.
  • Blend colors in the frill for a sense of movement.
  • If you’re using colored pencils, press harder for darker shades and lighter for highlights. With watercolors, leave some white spaces for a shiny effect.
Dinosaurs remind us that the world is always changing and evolving—and that we’re just one small part of a very long story.
