Chelsea Football Club, or as many call them, “the Blues”, is one of London’s most famous football teams. They’re instantly recognised by their iconic crest, which features a rampant lion holding a staff – it really stands out. Their home kit is, of course, a deep blue, and that’s exactly why they carry that nickname.

The Chelsea lion carries a strong symbolism: it represents courage, nobility, and Britain’s royal heritage. Interestingly, the club adopted this emblem back in 1953, and although it has gone through several redesigns, the lion has always remained at its heart.

Ideas and Tips for Colouring the Chelsea Crest

To bring this drawing to life, here’s a colour palette that will make it look striking and full of character.

Basic Colours for the Chelsea Crest

The easiest way to work on the crest is step by step, so you don’t get lost in the details:

  • Royal Blue: This is the main colour, elegant and bold. Use it for the outer border of the crest and for the lion itself.
  • Golden Yellow: Perfect for the staff the lion is holding, as well as the flowers.
  • Red: A small but important detail, used for the base of the staff.
  • White: For the background of the crest and the flower spaces.

It helps to start with the larger areas, such as the blue border, and then move to the details, like the lion. You’ll see the design come to life much faster that way.

Adding Depth and a 3D Effect

If you want your crest to really pop off the page rather than look flat, a few simple shading tricks will do the job. Think of it as giving the drawing a touch of light and shadow, just like you’d see in real life.

  • Light and Shade: Imagine light shining from the top right corner. Areas facing the light will be brighter, while the opposite side will look darker.
    • For the blue lion, add a slightly darker blue or even hints of purple in shaded spots, like under the head or along the inner legs.
    • For the yellow staff and flowers, a touch of ochre or light brown works well for the shadows.
  • Highlighting Edges: A white coloured pencil or even an eraser can be used to add highlights. For example, gently stroke along the top edge of the crest where the light would hit. The difference is immediate and makes the design shine.
  • Final Touch: Once all the colouring is done, trace over the main lines with a fine black pen or pencil. This makes the crest stand out cleanly and gives it a crisp, almost professional finish.
