Hippos: Giants of the Savannah

Hippos are fascinating and gigantic animals that live in Africa. They are known for their large size, wide mouths, and primarily aquatic lifestyle. Despite their bulky appearance and slow movement on land, hippos are excellent swimmers and can move quickly in the water.

How to Color a Hippo

  • Coloring the Skin: Hippos have grayish skin, but you can add shades of brown or pink to reflect how the sun and water affect their color. Start with a light gray as a base and add darker shadows to highlight the folds of their skin.
  • Eyes and Ears: The eyes and ears are smaller than the body. Use brown or black for the eyes and add a touch of pink or gray inside the ears.
  • Mouth: The mouth can be colored light pink or red to highlight its width, especially if you’re coloring a mother hippo yawning or a calf interacting with her.
  • Environment: Although they are out of the water, it’s common for hippos to be near a river or lake. Use greens and browns for the ground and add blues for the water in the background.

Diet: Hippos are herbivores, feeding mainly on grass at night.
