Hello Kitty’s full name is Kitty White, and over the years she’s become a global icon of kawaii culture. The truth is, her story is quite unusual and that’s what makes her so fascinating. She was “born” in Japan in 1974, thanks to designer Yuko Shimizu and the company Sanrio. Yet despite her worldwide fame, there’s one fact that still surprises many people: she isn’t actually a cat. Sanrio has clarified that she’s a British girl, Mimmy’s twin sister, and that she lives in London. This does feel a bit strange, because her design looks completely like a little kitten.

Another striking detail is that Hello Kitty doesn’t have a mouth. She was created that way so people could project their own emotions onto her. The idea is simple but powerful: if you’re happy, she looks happy; if you’re sad, she looks sad too. It’s a subtle but very empathetic way of connecting with whoever sees her. And of course, her bow on the left ear has become her unmistakable trademark.

How to colour this drawing: challenges and tips

Colouring this Hello Kitty illustration is a real treat, but it does come with a few tricky parts. The character’s simplicity works in your favour, yet the background and smaller details can make it harder to really bring the picture to life.

Challenges and difficulties

  • The outlines: Hello Kitty has very sharp lines, and staying within them can be a challenge, especially in tiny spots like the whiskers.
  • The gown and cap: These items are usually just one solid colour, which can easily look flat. This is the perfect area to push your skills a little further.

Level-up ideas

  • Play with shadows: To give the drawing a more professional look, add shading. For instance, on the graduation gown, apply a darker shade of the same colour in the folds and beneath the arms. This gives depth and avoids a flat effect.
  • Subtle gradients: Try a gentle gradient on the bow or the diploma. For example, start with a richer pink at the base of the bow and soften it towards the edges. This creates a soft 3D effect.
  • Depth in the background: Instead of filling the curtains and stage with one colour, go darker in the folds and lighter where the light would naturally fall.

5-colour palette for your drawing

  • Red: Classic for Hello Kitty’s bow and the graduation cap. It keeps the design iconic and recognisable.
  • Navy blue: A smart, elegant choice for the gown, adding formality.
  • Light yellow or cream: Works beautifully for the diploma and ribbon, bringing a soft glow.
  • Soft pink: For Hello Kitty’s cheeks, adding warmth and sweetness.
  • Light grey: Ideal for the stage and curtains, so the background supports the picture without stealing focus.
