This drawing shows Harry Potter in full action, wand raised, as if he’s just cast a spell in the middle of the forest. It’s one of those moments when anything could happen. That makes it a really interesting picture to color. The pose, the clothes in motion, the contrast between his figure and the background… everything invites you to try new things with your colors. You can use colored pencils, markers, or crayons—whatever you have at hand. The important thing is how you add depth, light, and that special touch that makes the character look real. Here, we’ll show you step by step how to do it, with practical ideas and, why not, a couple of fun facts about the world of Harry Potter.

Ideas and Tips for Coloring Harry Potter

  • Skin and Face: Use a light peach or soft beige as a base tone, then add shadows under the jawline, along the sides of the nose, and beneath the bangs. If you’re using colored pencils, start with gentle layers and increase pressure in the shadowed areas. You can add a hint of diluted red or light pink to the cheeks and the tip of the nose. If you’re using markers, start with the base tone and then blend in a slightly darker shade in strategic areas.
  • Hair: Harry’s hair is very dark, almost black. But avoid filling it in with flat black. Instead, start with a dark brown or warm gray base, and then layer black on top, leaving some highlights on the upper parts of the head or the strands that stick out. If you’re using pencils, you can lift out highlights with an eraser.
  • Glasses and Scar: The glasses should be black, but try to keep the lines precise. You can go over them with a fine-tipped marker, making sure not to cover up any facial details. The scar can be colored with dark red or burgundy, and you can add a touch of light on one side to make it look slightly raised or magical, as if it still holds some energy.
  • Clothes (Hogwarts Uniform):
    • Sweater: Use gray as a base, but try at least three shades: light gray for the central areas, medium for the general color, and dark gray for the shadows (under the arms, between folds). The collar and sleeve edges have red and gold.
    • Tie: Dark red with thin lines of ochre or light gold. For precision, use a very sharp pencil or a metallic gel pen.
    • Robe: Instead of filling it in with black, use several layers: dark gray as a base, then add black only to the edges, folds, and lower parts. Use dark blue in the deepest shadows for richness.
    • White Shirt: Don’t leave it uncolored. Add shadows with a very light blue-gray, especially on collars, elbows, and folds.
    • Pants and Shoes: Use the same logic as the sweater: medium gray as a base, with strong shadows in the crotch, back of the legs, and folded areas. Shoes can be brown or black. Add highlights with white (pencil or acrylic marker) on the tips or seams.
    • Wand: Medium brown base, then darken the end closest to the hand. You can mimic wood grain with a darker brown or a very sharp black pencil.
  • Background (Forest and Ground): Here you can get creative:
    • Trees and Vegetation: Olive green and pine green for the leaves, with some dry yellow to highlight the light. For trunks, mix light and dark brown, and if you want to add texture, try rubbing with rough paper.
    • Rocks: Light gray, with bluish shadows and some brown at the base to suggest earth.
    • Ground: Use a duller green than the trees, with brown earth patches. Add loose grass with quick, fine strokes.

USEFUL TIPS

  • Use blending stumps or cotton swabs to soften shadows, especially on skin.
  • If you combine pencil and marker, apply the marker first so you don’t clog the paper’s pores.
  • A sharp eraser lets you create small highlights and shines, for example in the hair or shoes.
  • Work from the background to the figure if you want to keep edges clean, or layer by layer, starting with general tones and then adjusting shadows and highlights.
